When points are gained, they first move from bowl one to bowl two. Power points are split among three bowls. Power points are used to cast spells, and may also be converted for resources. One unique aspect of the game is its power point mechanic. When a player cannot perform any more actions (or they choose not to), they must pass. Actions may involve settling new spaces, upgrading existing buildings, improving infrastructure like shipping, or increasing the faction's status in an elemental cult. Is Terra Mystica like Catan?Īt first blush, Terra Mystica looks a bit like perennial gateway game Catan, what with its board made of multicolored hexagons and its wooden settlement pieces. It is an incredible, challenging, and ever varied experience. Gaia Project has rocketed to the top (or very near the top) of my favorite solo games of all time.

The Automa Solo expansion allows you to play solo, combined with the Terra Mystica base game, and is playable with the Fire and Ice and/or Sea Merchant expansions. If one of the Structures is a Sanctuary, only three Structures are needed, but still a combined Power value of 7. How are Towns founded? A Town is automatically founded when at least four of your Structures with a combined Power value of 7 are directly adjacent to each other. The tech tracks in Gaia Project is way better than the cult track, I don’t think many people would disagree with this. Terra Mystica has the same map every game (without expansions). Gaia Project offers a lot more set up variation – The biggest being a unique map every time you play. Is Gaia project the same as Terra Mystica? Verdict: Although I enjoy Terra Mystica as a 2 player game, I enjoy it more multiplayer – I find I miss the extra interactions that you get in the multiplayer game it becomes much more of a solo game. One of the specific features of Terra Mystica that helps to yield these incredibly mind-bending strategic choices is the ‘power’ resource.
